GOLDEN JUBILEE CELEBRATED THROUGHOUT CANADA

Quebec Lieutenant Governor Holds Royal Visit Open House... London Monarchists Move City Hall to Name Golden Jubilee Square... Snowbirds wear Jubilee logo... Jubilee Flag Waves over many Communities... Alberta, NS Levees Hail the Sovereign... Expat Canadians mark Jubilee...

After the triumph of the London festivities in June, Golden Jubilee Summer rolled into Autumn, and anticipation built towards The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh's coast-to-coast-to coast homecoming in October, celebrations of Her Majesty's reign continued apace throughout Canada.

The release of The Queen's far-ranging itinerary produced applause for its imaginative breadth - with special attention going to plans for HM to attend an NHL hockey game and drop the ceremonial first puck in Vancouver. Only two negative reactions were voiced: the lack of any obvious opportunity for Toronto residents to welcome the Royal couple to Canada's largest city, and the omission from the programme of an Opening of Parliament by The Queen. The absence of Quebec from the itinerary, caused by the refusal of the provincial government to celebrate the Jubilee, was at least partly overcome as Lieutenant Governor Lise Thibault announced plans for a week-long Royal Visit display and Tea party in her Suite.

Amongst the many parties, concerts, tree-plantings and religious commemorations of the Jubilee, community-based efforts continued to stand out, many inspired by citizen requests. Possibly the most notable of these occurred in the Ontario metropolis of London, where a campaign stretching through Spring and Summer was led Professor Al Boyd, professor and long time monarchist, along with community activist Sandra Barker. The duo succeeded in persuading the city fathers in their Council Meeting on September 3rd to name a large public square adjacent to a new sports and entertainment venue as "Golden Jubilee Square."

The site, covering one-third of a city block in downtown London, was opened on October 24th by the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario after speeches by His Honour, the Mayor and Hon. London Branch Chairman J. Alvin Boyd. In a City Council chambers ceremony held immediately afterwards, His Honour presented Boyd with the Golden Jubilee Medal for his long service to Crown, League and community.
