VICE-REGAL INTERNS: PRODUCTIVE SUMMERS

Early reports suggest that the League's three Interns once again enjoyed useful and happy summers as Antony Dobrzensky, Keith Roy and Matthew Goodwin served the Lieutenant Governors of British Columbia, Ontario and Nova Scotia respectively. Keith's responsibilities included the mammoth task of coordinating His Honour's allocation of Golden Jubilee Medals, while Matthew worked on the vice-regal web site and assisted with speech ideas. Her Honour Myra A. Freeman wrote the Dominion Chairman Sept 11th to express her appreciation for the League's assistance, calling Matthew "a great promoter and ambassador for the Office of the Lieutenant Governor, and I was very pleased with his performance."

WINNIPEG TEENAGER TRANSLATES LEAGUE WEB SITE

The ability to add to the hitherto-brief contents of the French version of the League web site at www.monarchist.ca came over the summer thanks to the volunteer translation of Winnipeg student Michael Poplyansky, 14. A Toronto native who lived in Moncton and Montreal prior to settling on the Prairie, Michael has been in French Immersion classes since Grade One. He is now a student in the International Baccalaureate programme at Winnipeg's renowned Kelvin High School. A component of the IB programme is voluntary community service, CAS - and Michael contacted John Aimers to ask how he could assist.

Trilingual (Russian his third language), Michael enjoys history, hiking, the Royal Canadian Air Farce, playing the piano and baby sitting/tutoring - his part-time job. Michael writes, "I have been a monarchist for quite along time, probably ever since I learned how the system of government works. Being someone who enjoys history, I also value the ancient traditions that make up the Canadian culture. However, having come from a bilingual environment, I realize that some Canadians (not only francophones) view the monarchy as an institution that can only appeal to English Canadians. My own experience proves this attitude to be untrue, but the perception remains."

Michael's translations are currently being reviewed by members Paul Benoit and René Le Clère. Meanwhile, the League's growing web site having run out of space on its current server, HQ is negotiating for additional space at a rate that will overall prove less expensive. It is hoped to have Michael's splendid work up and running in November. Merci beaucoup, Michel!

LEAGUE NOTECARDS NOW AVAILABLE

As the result of an initiative by the Victoria Branch's Sales Coordinator Margaret Mace, and in collaboration with Margaret and her colleagues in terms of design and the initial order quantity, Dominion Headquarters this Autumn produced all-occasion League note cards for sale. (Ed - see Sales for Subjects, back cover). These cards highlight the League's Arms, and can be purchased in bulk by branches for fundraising purposes as well as individually by members. They replace the first League note cards, which were first printed in the 1980's by the Saskatchewan Branch, and subsequently sold nationwide with at least one re-printing. The stocks of these cards had dwindled; and since they bore the former League logo, it was decided to proceed with a new full-colour format.

LIEUTENANT GOVERNORS PRESENT LEAGUE BADGES OF SERVICE IN REGINA & FREDERICTON

During the summer, three League members whose homes did not lie on the route of HRH Prince Michael of Kent's Tour in March were accorded special recognition for their long and devoted service to the Monarchist League of Canada's work by receiving the League's Silver Badge of Service from their Lieutenant Governors. Her Honour Dr Counsell Trenholme presented long-serving New Brunswick Branch Chairman Marje Harrison with her Badge at a glittering Government House Dinner on June 26, while Her Honour Dr Lynda Haverstock pinned Badges on Fr Derek Nicholls and Isabel Bailey, devoted Saskatchewan past Chairman and Chairman, respectively, during a Government House Tea on August 7th, during which the League Flag flew over the forecourt. The Citations read by the Dominion Chairman, who presented each recipient to the Lieutenant Governor, were as follows:

  • MARJORIE HARRISON
Provincial Chairman of the New Brunswick Branch of the Monarchist League of Canada for over 20 years, this devoted loyalist combines a sound appreciation of the constitutional monarchy with an energetic and imaginative approach to life and a profound, unselfish loyalty to the Throne. Persistent in her endeavours, she has laboured for the cause of the Crown, often unsupported and in not very fertile fields. Nothing daunted, never complaining, she remains a pillar of good sense and cheerful commitment who has always been a reliable media spokesman and constant, sensible and credible presence for the League in this province. Accordingly, I ask Your Honour to present a Silver Badge of Service to our friend Marje Harrison, of Hampton.

  • ISABEL BAILEY
A community volunteer par excellence, celebrating her 50th year of involvement in both the University Women's Club and IODE, this teacher of home economics has served on national and provincial levels of the Home Economics Association, tutored at the library and assisted with Government House teas. She also found time to serve as Chairman of the League's Saskatchewan Branch from 1988-1993, a position she held with imagination, dignity and the great loyalty that is her hallmark. A wonderful cook, a woman of practical and devoted character and ready wit, coupled with a generosity of spirit that we all cherish, I ask Your Honour to present a Silver Badge of Service to Isabel Bailey, of Regina.

  • THE REVEREND DEREK NICHOLLS
For many years Rector of St Mary's Anglican Church, at which he succeeded another Saskatchewan Chairman, Fr Stan Sinclair, this faithful priest and pastor continues to minister at locums in retirement, currently serving in Moose Jaw. A prolific reader, a man of convinced and lively faith, never too busy for a cup of tea and a good conversation, he is in his 10th year of effective service as Provincial Chairman of the League, no small portion of his success, he would be quick to admit, stemming from his devoted wife Margaret who is as one in all his endeavours. For his loyalty, imagination and perseverance, I ask Your Honour to present a Silver Badge of Service to Fr Derek Nicholls, of Elbow.

REAN EGERTON MEYER,CD, UE 1929-2002

Monarchist League members in Victoria, in particular, as well as many in the Loyal Society community across Canada, felt profoundly saddened by the death of Rean Meyer, who died on August 17th after a short illness. Born of United Empire Loyalist parents in Waterloo, Quebec, Rean attended a short course at Royal Military College, was commissioned in the Canadian Grenadier Guards, and later served with the Royal Canadian Regiment and the Canadian Guards at Petawawa and Quebec, and with the British Army of the Rhine, Germany, attaining the rank of Major prior to his retirement. Married in 1956 to Shirley Olson, the Meyers wintered in California for many years before they settled in Victoria in 1989. Here, using their beautiful oceanside home "Seascape" as a base, Rean renewed a life-long interest in the activities of Loyal Societies. He chaired the British Columbia Branch of the Heraldry Society of Canada, and edited both its own and the HSC's national publications with eclectic panache. He was a Knight of the Venerable Order of St John of Jerusalem. And he was an enthusiastic monarchist, who could not understand the hostility of official Ottawa towards an institution he regarded as the cornerstone of his personal loyalty as well as of Canadian identity. A generous host, an absorbing raconteur, and a great optimist by nature, Rean's memory will long remain alive amongst those organizations and individuals whom he served and befriended. It was a particular honour - thanks to the immediate cooperation of The Chancellery at Rideau Hall - for this writer to have visited with Rean at the Royal Jubilee Hospice, Victoria, only a few days before he died, and there to have presented him with his Golden Jubilee Medal, the fitting tribute from a grateful nation for a lifetime of unflinching service and profound loyalty. JEAN GALLOWAY, RIP

Jean Galloway died on August 11 aged 84. Wife for 54 years of League co-founder Colonel Strome Galloway, her Funeral was attended by many members who had known Jean, and admired the way she had borne a long and debilitating illness during which Strome had devotedly nursed her. A graduate in Education, she wrote for the University of Toronto's student newspaper with future stars Wayne & Shuster, then taught high school English before commencing a varied career in journalism. She was Past President of both the Ottawa and Toronto Canadian Women's Press Clubs. During the League's early days in the 1970's, Jean frequently welcomed monarchists to "Redstones," the Galloways' comfortable Ottawa home, where she dispensed generous hospitality and good advice in equal measure. At one with Strome in his military and public career, Jean's unstinting love and keen mind underlay a home and marriage that were at once both happy and busy. We remember her life with gratitude and affection, and extend our sympathies to Strome and to all his and Jean's family. JLA

LEAGUE MEMBERS AWARDED GOLDEN JUBILEE MEDALS

As part of the official observances of The Golden Jubilee of the Queen's Reign, the federal government obtained approval of Her Majesty to issue a Golden Jubilee Medal, to be "awarded to Canadians who have made a significant contribution to their fellow citizens, their community or to Canada." The Medal, part of the Canadian Honours System established in 1967, carries on a tradition of celebrating significant anniversaries as in the case of the Silver Jubilee and Canada 125 Medals. Some 46,000 Medals are to be awarded, of which it is understood 8,000 are to go to members of HM Canadian Forces.

Rideau Hall announced that "in order to have a list of recipients that is representative of all regions of Canada, various organizations are invited to propose the names of candidates for the Medal: the federal, provincial and territorial levels of government, national professional, educational and cultural organizations, military and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, veterans' groups, sports associations, and philanthropic and charitable bodies."

The Golden Jubilee Medal carries a contemporary effigy of The Queen on the obverse. The reverse features the design of a stylised maple leaf with CANADA at the bottom and the years 1952 and 2002 on the left and right of the Royal Cypher and Crown. The Medal is worn suspended from a broad royal blue ribbon, with red outer stripes, double white stripes and a red central stripe.

The Monarchist League of Canada was named a partner in the Golden Jubilee Medal award process. Its allocation of nominations was relatively small in number, at 20. However, thanks to the cooperation of other partners, it has been able to secure some 55 nominations in total, from an original list of over 125 names compiled by the Dominion Chairman with the advice of Dominion officers, and past and present Branch Chairmen.

The League hopes that the balance of its desired list, along many other League members, will receive recognition as a result of nominations by other partners such as Senators, MP's, provincial MPP's (in some cases) and other community groups. It looks forward to publishing in future issues of Canadian Monarchist News the names of all members who have received this special recognition, together with the source of their nomination.

At press time, the League was aware of the following honorees, including members on the Table of Precedence of Canada, recipients of The Royal Victorian Order and the recipients of The Order of Canada, who are receive their Medals automatically:

Jean Laurain, et daté du 18 septembre 1981. Bravo, ancien soldat distingué!

LEAGUE CORRECTS BC MUSEUM "BRITISH" REFERENCE

Prompt action by a Vancouver League member, Trevor Kramer, and the Victoria Branch Chairman, Bruce Hallsor, made an outstanding Jubilee Exhibition at the Royal British Columbia Museum [ed: see page 17] even better. The Museums' original publicity invited visitors to celebrate the "British" Monarchy, but Hallsor's intervention and an alert response from Museum officials changed the reference to "Royalty" in recognition of the fact that Canada's Monarchy is separate and distinct from the British Crown - hence Canadians are celebrating our own Queen's Jubilee. Well done!

YOUNG QUEBEC CITY MONARCHIST

SERVES ON LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR'S HISTORY COMMITTEE
JEUNE MONARCHISTE QUÉBECOISE ASSISTE SON HONNEUR

On April 23, 2001, I received a letter from the Office of the Lieutenant Governor of Québec. Her Honour invited me to attend a meeting at which she would present the details of a project she wanted to undertake. Little did I know that this meeting would be the beginning of an interesting and enriching vice-regal experience!

Madame Thibault a formé ce comité dans le but de s'assurer que le patrimoine de l'institution du Lieutenant-gouverneur soit conservé et accessible à un plus grand nombre de personnes possible.

Over the past year, the History Committee has undertaken many projects. We have met at each month. Each member has shared the results of his research to find papers and pictures. We also have considered the best ways to make population better discover and understand history.

I am glad and proud to be part of this Committee. Being in touch with the

representative of the Queen in Québec and with people who have so many stories to tell about our province's history is a great privilege.

William St-Michel, 17 ans
